What Is STARS?

STARS is a service provided by the Special Education Department for students in grades K-5 who have learning disabilities in the areas of Reading, Language Arts, and/or Math.  These services are provided as part of the students' Individualized Education Plan (IEP), which is determined as a result of their testing data.  Along with regular education instruction in the classroom in the areas of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), the students are provided with accelerated learning methods as determined by the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee.  The program is intended to be a reinforcement of what the students learn in their classrooms.

The students are grouped in age-appropriate and ability-appropriate groups for instruction, and class sizes vary from two to eight students.  As students are encouraged to stretch their abilities and attain the goals in their IEP's, they are additionally given instruction on the grade-level TEKS with and without modifications.  A wide variety of activities and instructional teaching methods are used to foster learning.  These students are graded cooperatively by Regular Education staff and Special Education stuff, and the IEP progress is also reported.
